Oscars 2013: Analysis & Prediction (Part 4 of 7)

This is the fourth of seven parts devoted to my analysis and prediction of each category for the Academy Awards 2013 celebrating films from 2012. This section will cover three categories: Best Production Design, Best Makeup & Hairstyling, and Best Costume Design.

BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN
Lincoln
Anna Karenina

Will Win: Anna Karenina
Dark Horse: Life of Pi
Should Win: Life of Pi

My initial gut feeling says it will be a fight between Anna Karenina and Les Miserables. But I am beginning to think that the unconventional and stunning Life of Pi may pull a pleasant surprise on awards night. Recent winners of this category - Hugo (2011), Alice in Wonderland (2010), and Avatar (2009) - don't quite indicate that the Academy is favourable towards costume dramas. But Anna Karenina still remains the frontrunner by virtue of its genre.

BEST MAKEUP & HAIRSTYLING
Hitchcock
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Les Miserables

Will Win: Hitchcock
Dark Horse: Les Miserables
Should Win: Hitchcock

There is no Anna Karenina to compete with, so this should be a two-way fight between Les Miserables and Hitchcock. I was particularly impressed by the hairstyling and makeup efforts in Hitchcock, especially the work done on Anthony Hopkins and Scarlett Johansson. Last year, another film depicting the story of a famous British person - The Iron Lady (2011) also won this category. However, Les Miserables is always in the shout for these 'artistic' awards, if awards momentum fall its way.

BEST COSTUME DESIGN
Anna Karenina
Les Miserables
Lincoln
Mirror Mirror

Will Win: Anna Karenina
Dark Horse: Les Miserables
Should Win: Anna Karenina

Anna Karenina will win. The Academy likes to award period costume dramas, especially the exuberant and sumptuous kind. Jacqueline Durran has been nominated previously in the same category for Pride and Prejudice (2005) and Atonement (2007), but has never won. I think this will be her year. Lincoln and Les Miserables are also period films, but both costume designers are first-time nominees and thus are less likely to win. However, Paco Delgado has a shout as dark horse if awards momentum fall into Les Miserables' way. The late Eiko Ishioka of Mirror Mirror has previously won for Dracula (1992), and Colleen Atwood of Snow White and the Huntsman has won the Oscar three times now. Both are unlikely to add another statuette into their collection, especially when their films aren't exactly award magnets.
